Tapered Sleeves

Rol-Tec's tapered base sleeves are manufactured from reinforced fiberglass and specially designed resins. Using the original proprietary design and the highest quality materials, the sleeve form is maintained while the construction allows for the flexibility needed to expand for installation. Wall thickness ranges from .060 inches to .080 inches, determined by the diameter and available air pressure.

Tapered Base Sleeve Applications

Tapered sleeves keep production moving across industries that depend on a shaft running true. In each of these settings, a sleeve that shifts under tension can misfeed material, throw off registration, or stop a line cold:

  • Printing, coating, and laminating
  • Logistics and warehousing
  • Manufacturing and packaging
  • Food processing and pharmaceutical production
  • Postal and courier sorting operations

Urethane vs. Rubber Covering Options

Tapered urethane sleeves are recommended when your process demands superior abrasion, cut, and tear resistance, along with strong load-bearing capacity. Urethane covering is available across a durometer range of 30 Shore A to 70 Shore D, so you can match hardness to the wear resistance and load requirements your process needs. Urethane also typically offers better ozone and oil resistance than rubber, though it loses polymer strength faster than rubber in environments with prolonged heat exposure.

Where heat resistance or a lower cost solution is the priority, we rubber-cover the tapered sleeves in-house with a rubber compound selected for your process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tapered and a parallel sleeve?

Both are built from the same reinforced fiberglass materials. A tapered sleeve mounts on a tapered air shaft and is held in place by air pressure, which suits frequent roll changes. A parallel sleeve mounts on a straight shaft and is typically used where the roll stays in place for longer runs.

When should I choose urethane covering over rubber for a sleeve?

Urethane holds up better where your process demands high abrasion, cut, or tear resistance, heavy load-bearing capacity, or exposure to oils and solvents. Rol-Tec covers sleeves in-house across a 30 Shore A to 70 Shore D durometer range, so the covering can be matched to the specific wear and load requirements of your process. Keep in mind urethane loses polymer strength faster than rubber under prolonged heat exposure, so rubber is often the better choice when heat is the dominant factor.

How do I know when a sleeve needs to be replaced?

Watch for a glazed or hardened surface, visible cracking, uneven wear across the sleeve, or material starting to slip during runs that previously held tight. Any of these signs mean the sleeve no longer grips as it should. Rol-Tec's roller-recovering services can restore an existing shaft rather than requiring a full replacement.
