Grinding & Grooving Services for Rollers

Grinding & Grooving Services for Rollers

The groove pattern on a roller isn't decorative. It controls how material tracks, spreads, and releases across the surface. Rol-Tec provides grinding and grooving services for rollers in six standard patterns, with the capacity to handle rollers up to 30.50 inches outer diameter (OD) and 280 inches in overall length.

Getting the groove pattern right matters as much as getting the surface finish right. A spreader roller cut with the wrong geometry won't push wrinkles out of a web effectively. A helical groove with an incorrect lead angle won't stabilize lateral tracking. That's why grooving and precision grinding at Rol-Tec are handled together as a single process, all done under one roof.

Groove Patterns We Cut

We groove rollers in the following patterns. Each has a specific function:

  • Diamond grooving provides aggressive gripping and air venting across the roller face. It's commonly specified in film, foil, and flexible packaging converting, where air entrapment between the web and roller causes wrinkles or registration errors.
  • Spreader grooves are cut in a pattern that pushes the material outward from center as it passes over the roller. This is a standard requirement in paper, film, and nonwoven web handling where lay-flat quality directly affects downstream processing.
  • Helical patterns run in a continuous spiral along the roller face, creating a directional effect that stabilizes web movement and reduces lateral wander. You'll find these on rollers in packaging lines, paper mills, and anywhere consistent web path control is critical.
  • Chevron grooving uses a V-shaped pattern that can be oriented to move material toward or away from the center. The directionality makes it useful in converting, textiles, and plastic film extrusion, where the goal is controlled spreading without edge damage.
  • V-Shape grooves are precisely angled cuts used where a roller needs to channel fluid, provide traction, or perform a specific contact function. Applications include grain and cocoa processing rollers in the food and agriculture sector.
  • Herringbone is a mirrored, angled-groove pattern that balances the lateral forces acting on the web from both sides simultaneously. It's widely specified in paper, printing, and laminating operations where even tension distribution across the full roller face is required.

Who We Work With

Rol-Tec's roller grinding and grooving services are used by manufacturers from a wide range of industries, including:

  • Paper and Pulp
  • Printing and Packaging
  • Plastics and Film
  • Metals Processing
  • Textiles
  • Food & Agriculture
  • Battery Manufacturing

These industries have one thing in common: the roller surface isn't incidental to the process; it's central to it. Whether the roller is managing nip pressure on a paper machine, spreading a polyethylene film, guiding steel strip, or calendering a battery electrode, the surface geometry has to be right.

All grooving and grinding work is performed in-house at our Green Bay, Wisconsin, facility. We don't subcontract this work, which means tighter tolerances, faster turnaround, and a single point of contact from evaluation through delivery.

What Roller Grinding & Grooving Services Can We Provide for You?

When you're ready to spec out a groove pattern, contact Rol-Tec at 1.800.497.4950 or submit a request online. Tell us your material type, line speed, and roller dimensions, and we'll recommend the right pattern and depth for your application.
